Perhaps it is jealousy. I'm pretty sure they're fascinated by the life force that lies there and the fact that is where all humanity enters the world from. Yeah, it's jealousy followed by desires of possession.
Mavis I think you are spot on! Freud got it all wrong with 'penis envy', he should have described 'womb envy'.
