I am always seeking to unpick the complex fabric of family life. And I am always surprised by just how strong the taboos are against certain aspects. You never look too deep behind a smother's love, don't question who the love is helping. You accept a 'normal' seeming family at face value. When I was small, and to an extent even now I find it hard to accept that most families are dysfunctional. I so badly wanted the perfect life I saw in advertising and squeaky clean sit-coms, I think I will never stop yearning for that.

This page evolved and changed over a couple of days because I had problems with the composition. Where the figure of the young woman stands now was a giant flying fish with a baby riding shotgun looking very fierce. But it looked all wrong, too many focal points. So I resorted to my favourite page saver, I glued a fresh piece of white paper over the offending image and started again.I use this method often to redo sections I am unhappy with.

I created a post previously documenting the penis, so I am aware a celebration of the Vagina in art is long overdue. I was reminded of this recently by Katy Kretz, a talented artist known for her use of the vagina in her work.
Any discussion of the genitals in art tends to have a political colour however much I try to avoid it. Plastic surgeons are offering 'vaginoplast/labioplasty', surgical procedures apparently very important for women afflicted with 'ugly' vaginae! This is not about function, it is purely cosmetic! In the US this industry is worth $6.8m (£4.4m). In the UK the latest figures come from a 2009 report in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It revealed that in 2008 the number of operations increased by 70% compared with the previous year: 1,118 labioplasty operations on the NHS. (There were 669 in 2007 and 404 in 2006.) And that's just the NHS. The Harley Medical Group reported over 5,000 enquiries about cosmetic gynaecology last year, 65% for labial reduction. So we have come so far we can have 'pretty vaginae' on demand. In other words, a vagina that matches up to those seen in pornography, neat, virginal little girl parts that don't offend!
There is thankfully women who have the sense and the confidence to question this dubious procedure and indeed protest against it. The Muff March chanting "keep your mitts off my muff", took place last Saturday in central London.Three cheers for the Muffia!

My contributions tend to be less explicitly vaginal, more about the role it plays. Giving life fills me with awe and I worry about trivialising the vagina by focusing on it too much. Strangely, I have no problem with portraying the penis as a comic object!

Does this really require an explanation? I think not! Women do fill me with despair sometimes, most recently while watching a program on vaginae. Apparently the NHS, in it's infinite wisdom is offering 'vaginaplasty',: A completely unnecessary operation to tidy up 'ugly' vaginae! How do women fall for this crap? Most men are grateful for any access to a vagina, their 'beauty' has never before been an issue, so why now? And why is it that the NHS that is so strapped for cash, feel it urgent enough to provide this vile mutilation to misguided females apparently as young as 12? It is as if the suffragettes never suffered!

This follows on from the above image. I am a feminist, a very ardent, proud one. But I don't hate men, they have their own issues to deal with, even though I don't totally absolve them from their historical mistreatment of women. I do wish women's history was given more prominence in the school curriculum, if only to empower young girls and allow them to see that they are more than a series of holes to accommodate men.

How many of you out there have heard this old wives tale? That if you swallow a fruit pit you will grow a tree in your stomach and it will emerge from your 'lady garden'? I took it a step further and added children! Is it any wonder that we are all so screwed up when trusted grown ups feed us these nightmares? I was stupidly gullible and brooded over these dark possibilities for years.

I'm still working on the meaning of this one, I may come back to it at some point.

Dogs are my passion. They have been used widely in art to symbolise faithfulness, trust and unconditional love. I like to use dog images a lot to say different things. We humans really don't deserve such devoted companions.

The RCA Secrets show is an annual exhibition to benefit the Fine Art students at the school. Artists are invited to submit 3 postcard size original works that are exhibited anonymously. The postcards are signed on the back, and are only revealed once purchased and the sale is over. The public are attracted by the promise of snagging a Tracey Emin or a Grayson Perry for the paltry sum of £45. The vast majority of the 2900 works are by rising stars of the art world and RCA Alumni. This is my contribution for this year.

Len Shelley 2 March 1964 - 13 October 2010

Len was my kind of artist. Passionate, compulsive and brilliant. His work was original, beautifully made and veered from the bitingly satirical to the hysterically funny. Len exuded warmth and good humour. He was a force of nature, when he walked into a room you just knew anything could happen, and something usually did.
I first met him when he conducted a workshop on fetish dolls at Hastings College and he went on to become a huge influence on my work. His encouragement and enthusiasm for what I was doing gave me the confidence and self belief to apply to the Royal College of Art, so I owe him a lot.

Len had a great penchant for the macabre and the dark side but giving them a humorous twist. Nothing made his face light up more that finding a dessicated sea gull carcase, a rusty piece of metal or a wormy sea smoothed piece of wood. And he really put them to good use. His head was full of odd stories that a news paper headline or an overheard word would unlock. He'd then build a piece of work around the words that would cut straight to the core of the subject. These rich boxes were frozen moments: covetable and mouthwatering.

I'm finding it so hard to do Len justice as an artist and as a human being. Everyone who new him has a few choice Len stories that they now treasure. He was loved by so many, and has left a huge gap among Hastings 'art' community. It has been just over a year since he passed away and I still can't get my head round it.

Rest in peace Len, you are sorely missed!

The bird calls out what sounds like "Where's my sister?" in Arabic. It does it persistently , in a sad, plaintive manner that gave me the creeps. On the walk back from school in Baghdad, I'd hear a whole flock of them asking " Where's my sister?". It sounded so sad. In my world birds have insight and a sacred knowledge that we humans are not privy to.

I overheard this sad conversation on the Hastings to Brighton train recently. It took place between two young men who were obviously comparing notes on women. The depressing part is that it could have taken place 50 years ago without sounding out of place. The moral of the piece? Avoid wearing red lipstick? No chance. i read a story in a newspaper recently about a man who scouted for women in the lonely hearts pages, he'd invite them to a romantic picnic, listen as they poured their troubles out and at the end of a perfect afternoon would dispatch them without a second thought. He rationalised his actions by saying that he saved them from lonely sad lives after giving them a good time, it was an altruistic act of ultimate kindness you see!

It is widely believed among the old wives of Arabia that a bite by a rabid dog results in the human giving birth to a litter of puppies. My Arabic grandmother was convinced of this, and knowing our English obsession with dogs, would warn us of this on a regular basis. This only acted as an incentive as far as I could see, to find a rabid dog to bite me. I was going to get a litter of puppies one way or another.

This portfolio of hand-tinted lithographs purports to illustrate the "discovery of life on the moon." In 1836, Richard E. Locke, writing for the New York Sun, claimed that the noted British astronomer Sir John Herschel had discovered life on the moon. Flora and fauna included bat-men, moon maidens (with luna-moth wings), moon bison, and other extravagant life forms. Locke proposed an expedition to the moon using a ship supported by hydrogen balloons. what an imagination, and of course they had to sex things up a little!

This Is a group I did for a show that never happened, they are called 'we All Vibrate'. I had read a scientific article on the fact that everything vibrates at an individual rate, and how we respond to certain people depends on how our vibrations interact. I have always been fascinated by how we give off so many signals and cues that we are not consciously aware of but pick up on anyway. Life is so complex!

Although this image is fairly self explanatory, I can give a little background. For 3 years I commuted on an almost daily basis to Brighton, where I was doing my degree in printmaking. I developed an addiction of sorts to cheap gossip magazines with their lurid images and shocking stories. they gave me an intense course in the human psych, and it never ceased to amaze me just how willing people were to reveal stuff about themselves. the magazines inspired me with narratives to dissect. i liked the vulnerability and sheer humanness I found there.

Coming from two cultures, two religions and two vastly differing world views, I feel caught between east and west, so I pick and choose from both sides and make up my own quilt of values and beliefs. This image is an attempt to understand how people can have such differing ways of looking at themselves.

When I was small, I believed that really tall trees touched heaven, Jack and The Beanstalk obviously planted this fertile seed. When I was younger, I'd lie on the grass with my ear to the ground and I'd be convinced I could hear a heartbeat. It never occurred to be that the earth wasn't a living thing. I didn't find this particularly reassuring, as my experience of anything living was that it could turn on you. The earth had a power over me and I wasn't too sure about that. I haven't yet worked out the rest but it will eventually make sense. Thanks to all of you who have offered insights to these works, it always amazes me how others can cut through the crap and see stuff I couldn't.
