Royal College Of Arts Secrets Exhibition 2011 - My Cards

The RCA Secrets show is an annual exhibition to benefit the Fine Art students at the school. Artists are invited to submit 3 postcard size original works that are exhibited anonymously. The postcards are signed on the back, and are only revealed once purchased and the sale is over. The public are attracted by the promise of snagging a Tracey Emin or a Grayson Perry for the paltry sum of £45. The vast majority of the 2900 works are by rising stars of the art world and RCA Alumni. This is my contribution for this year.

Moleskine Diary Pages Nov 2011 - I Saw Everything

This group of works are a visual representations of the kind of people I detest, maybe for that very reason, I come across them all the time. This person, who I know very well thinks she has a God given right to take precedence before everyone else. When challenged, she blatantly lies and talks her way out of situations. Do you know quite how much I loathe you but am too chicken to say anything?

Haven't we all met one of these? Always hearing half a statement then jumping to conclusions. Living with someone like this isn't fun!

Len Shelley

Len Shelley  2 March 1964  -  13 October 2010

Len was my kind of artist. Passionate, compulsive and brilliant. His work was original, beautifully made and veered from the bitingly satirical to the hysterically funny. Len exuded warmth and good humour. He was a force of nature, when he walked into a room you just knew anything could happen, and something usually did.
I first met him when he conducted a workshop on fetish dolls at Hastings College and he went on to become a huge influence on my work. His encouragement and enthusiasm for what I was doing gave me the confidence and self belief to apply to the Royal College of Art, so I owe him a lot.
Len had a great penchant for the macabre and the dark side but giving them a humorous twist. Nothing made his face light up more that finding a dessicated sea gull carcase, a rusty piece of metal or a wormy sea smoothed piece of wood. And he really put them to good use. His head was full of odd stories that a news paper headline or an overheard word would unlock. He'd then build a piece of work around the words that would cut straight to the core of the subject. These rich boxes were frozen moments: covetable and mouthwatering.
I'm finding it so hard to do Len justice as an artist and as a human being. Everyone who new him has a few choice Len stories that they now treasure. He was loved by so many, and has left a huge gap among Hastings 'art' community. It has been just over a year since he passed away and I still can't get my head round it.

Rest in peace Len, you are sorely missed!

Moleskine Diary Pages Nov - 2011- Soap BoxT

The alternative to Santa's work shop is the one run by the Gods. The pull our strings, manipulate chance and just for fun, every so often will pull the rug from under our feet. We remain deluded, thinking that we are the masters of our destiny and the authors of our own narrative. Or at least this is how I imagine the universe works!

Moleskine Diary Pages Nov 2011 -We Lived In A Place Of Secrets

We were left with the skin

A newly completed A3 watercolour on illustration board. When my mother was dying, i am convinced I saw her essence (soul) rise up from her. The process took several minutes starting with her feet. What if something of us lives on and goes on to another phase? The same thing happened when my grandfather was dying, so I know it wasn't my imagination.
